MONTEREY – Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay) announced that Governor Newsom has signed four of her bills into law, advancing safeguards for public office, protecting constitutional rights for all Californians, strengthening consumer protections, and improving essential services for children.
"Public trust is earned through accountability, transparency, and a system that puts people first," said Addis. "I'm grateful that Governor Gavin Newsom has signed four of our bills, strengthening who is eligible to hold public office, protecting democracy, increasing transparency for consumers, and extending oversight of children's services. I'm proud that these measures will become law and will continue delivering for residents of the Central Coast."
The four measures, signed by Governor Newsom this past week, include:
Restoring Public Trust in Government and Elections
AB 2691: Public Trust Protection Act – Bars people convicted of sexual assault and trafficking felonies from holding office.
Keeping Communities Safe
AB 2393: False Imprisonment and Arrest Remedies Act (FIARA) – Enables Californians to file lawsuits when private police contractors or federal agents use excessive or unlawful force that violates their constitutional rights.
AB 1744: Clear Labels Clear Seas Act – Prohibits sunscreen companies from labeling products as "reef-safe" or "reef-friendly" when products contain chemicals known to harm coral reefs.
Improving Care for Children
AB 2486: California Children's Services Advisory Group Sunset Extension – Continues California's work to implement the "Whole-Child Model," or an organized delivery system that will provide comprehensive, coordinated services for children and youth with special health care needs.
All four bills take effect January 1, 2027. Governor Newsom has until September 30, 2026, to sign all other pending legislation into law.
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
