Addis Celebrates Reopening of Highway 1, Highlights Return of Regional Tourism

For immediate release:

BIG SUR – Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), joined state and local elected officials, transportation leaders, local business owners, and tourism officials at a press conference hosted at Ragged Point Inn celebrating the economic resurgence along the Central Coast following the reopening of Highway 1.

The reopening comes after nearly three years of closures and repairs that caused multiple landslides and roadway collapses that disrupted travel and hindered tourism along the scenic corridor.

"The importance of Big Sur to our economy, our well-being, and our Central Coast way of life is unrivaled," said Addis. "Big Sur is part of the Central Coast's DNA - and helps make our economy the fourth largest on the globe. Thank you to CalTrans, local, state, and federal reps, and the countless residents and business owners that coalesced to make this reopening a success."

Tourism officials highlighted double digit increases in hotel occupancy rates along the coast since the full reopening and are hopeful those numbers will rise in anticipation of World Cup matches in California.

Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
