The city previously tried to implement a similar ban but oil companies sued, and in 2024, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge struck down the policy, concluding that it conflicted with a state law that granted drilling oversight to the California Geologic Energy Management Division. In response, Newsom signed AB 3233, a bill by Assemblymember Dawn Addis, which allowed local governments to ban drilling.
